The Madrean Sky Islands, also known as the Sonoran Sky Islands, are a series of 57 isolated mountains that run from Arizona and New Mexico to Northern Mexico. Each mountain sits in the hot and arid desert of the surrounding lowlands, however, their tops are adorned with pine-oak forests. This unique landscape makes this region a hotspot and home to one of the most biologically diverse regions of the world.  

Greater Good Charities' Biodiversity and Conservation Team is dedicated to educating local students about the natural history and amazing plants and animals living right in their backyard. The future of the environment begins with the education of today's youth and their understanding of the natural environment in which they live.

The Madrean Education program brings knowledge of the natural history of Sonora directly to the local community. By educating local students and involving communities in expeditions and conservation efforts, the fragile Sky Island ecosystems have a greater chance to survive and thrive. Since 2017, the MDE program has provided scholarships to Mexican college students who study and write about the Sky Islands for their undergraduate thesis.
