The purpose of the removable front portions were intended for the signal lineman to carry out routine maintenance on the instrument with removing the lid with its bell thus prevent its operation. A nice early pattern example of a Great Western Railway manufactured split case block bell, these split case bells were mostly converted with a one piece lid. The purpose of the removable front portions were intended for the signal lineman to carry out routine maintenance on the instrument with removing the lid with its bell thus prevent its operation. The idea didn't actually work out and most were converted. This bell is in totally original condition and well over 110 years old and in full working order. Particular nice is the G.W.R. brass registration plate is present!
